The following steps are required to properly initialize the UART module:
Command Register (UCR)
Baud Rate Generator Register (UBG1 and UBG2)
Interrupt Vector Register (UIVR)
Interrupt Mask Register (UIMR)
Auxiliary Control Register (UACR)
Clock Select Register (UCSR)
Mode Register 1 (UMR1)
Mode Register 2 (UMR2)
Command Register (UCR)

1. If required, program operation of Receiver Ready-to-Send (RxRTS Bit).
2. Select Receiver-Ready or FIFO-Full Notification (R/F Bit).
3. Select character or block-error mode (ERR Bit).
4. Select parity mode and type (PM and PT Bits).
5. Select number of bits per character (B/Cx Bits).
1. Select the mode of operation (CMx bits).
2. If required, program operation of Transmitter Ready-to-Send (TxRTS Bit).
3. If required, program operation of Clear-to-Send (TxCTS Bit).
4. Select stop-bit length (SBx Bits).
Reset the receiver and transmitter.

Program the vector number for a UART module interrupt or use auto-vector, as desired.
