The MPLAB IDE allows you to:

The MPASM assembler is a full featured universal
macro assembler for all PICmicro MCU’s. It can pro-
duce absolute code directly in the form of HEX files for
device programmers, or it can generate relocatable
objects for the MPLINK object linker.
The MPASM assembler has a command line interface
and a Windows shell and can be used as a stand-alone
application on a Windows 3.x, or greater, system. The
MPASM assembler generates relocatable object files,

which contains source lines and generated machine
code, and a COD file for debugging.
