Registers and Descriptors Description
There are three kinds of registers designed for AN983B/BX. They are AN983B/BX configuration registers, PCI
control/status registers, and Transceiver control/status registers.
The AN983B/BX configuration registers are used to initialize and configure the AN983B/BX for identifying and
querying the AN983B/BX.
The PCI control/status registers are used to communicate between the host and AN983B/BX. Host can initialize,
control, and read the status of the AN983B/BX through the mapped I/O or memory address space.
Regarding the registers of transceiver portion of AN983B/BX, it includes 7 basic registers which are defined
according to the clause 22 “Reconciliation Sub-layer and Media Independent Interface” and clause 28 “Physical
Layer link signaling for 10 Mbit/s and 100 Mbit/s Auto-Negotiation on twisted pair” of IEEE802.3u standard. The
AN983B/BX also provides receive and transmit descriptors for packet buffering and management. These
descriptors are described in the following section.
