GP-IB Bus Line Specifications
There are three kinds of devices that can be connected in a GP-IB system:
Controllers, Talkers, and Listeners. (Some devices include more than one of
these functions.) These three functions are explained below.
The Controller controls communications in the entire GP-IB system. The Con-
troller specifies the devices that receive data and messages (Listeners), spec-
ifies the devices that send data (Talkers), and manages the system
Normally, only one Controller is allowed in one system. Even if two or more
Controllers are connected to the same bus, only one of the devices can actu-
ally operate as the Controller.
A Talker sends data when directed to do so by the Controller.
Talkers include devices such as digital multimeters, which output measure-
ment data. Only one Talker can operate in the system at a time.
A Listener receives data when directed to do so by the Controller.
Listeners include devices such as printers. Unlike Talkers, two or more Listen-
ers can operate in the system simultaneously.
The GP-IB cable has 16 signal lines and 8 ground lines, as shown in the fol-
lowing diagram.
