Section D – Testing and Checking Clearances
Step 10 — Measuring the voltage and current
CAUTION: Be
work surface. Since the panel is flexible but the cells are not, any bending of the panel can
result in broken cells. Be sure to support the center of the panel when you lift it, so that it
doesn’t sag.
The easiest way to test your panel is to point it towards the sun and measure the open circuit voltage
and the short circuit current at the conductors that go out the two thru-holes in grooves “D” and “F.”
Open circuit voltage should be over 7.0 VDC. 7.5 VDC or more is not uncommon.
The short circuit current will vary greatly, depending on light intensity, but on a sunny day with no
clouds, you should get somewhere around 4 to 4.5 amps or more, depending on the season and time of
day. In bright summer sunshine 5.5 amps or more is possible.
Troubleshooting

With all cells installed in
the cavities and all bus-
bar connections soldered,
carefully move the panel
into bright sunlight.
Measure the open circuit
voltage at the two thru-
hole copper bus-bars. It
should be over 7.0 VDC.
Measure the short circuit
current. It should be over
4 amps.
If your measurements are significantly less from these figures, check your solder connections,
especially the ones between the bus-bars and the cells themselves.
Double-check the solder connections between the bus-bar in groove “C” and the double bus-bar in
groove “A.”
Double-check the solder joint going from the double bus-bar to the single bar in groove “F”.
