Pointer to a short where the unit handle is to be written:
-1: if the unit fails to open
0: if no unit is found
>0 : a handle to the device opened (this handle is not valid unless the
function returns true)
Pointer to a short to which the percentage progress is to be written. 100%
implies that the open operation is complete
