Ethernet TCP/IP network performance
When selecting an architecture, it is advisable to take performance into account at the
earliest possible stage. When selecting an architecture, the designer must:

weakest link in the chain, which can be:

that may be poorly defined at this stage of the project.

The purpose of the next few pages is to provide the main information and guidelines
needed to answer the second point. Given that the performance of an Ethernet
architecture is linked to many parameters, these pages do not provide the information
needed to calculate the network performance. Their aim is to focus on the following main
aspects:
b
that meets the application requirements. As calculating the load involves many
parameters, only the main guidelines are given on pages 6/30 to 6/33.
b
(see page 6/35).
b
selection of the CPU and definition of the number of Ethernet connections required
on the PLC according to the application (see pages 6/36 and 6/37).
When evaluating the load on an Ethernet network, calculation of the communication
services of all the peripheral devices connected to the network is necessary.
Because of the high performance of the Ethernet network, the load is often less than
the Ethernet network limits and does not significantly affect the application response
time. This is due to the high speed of the Ethernet network: the network transaction
time is less than 10% of the total application response time. To help ensure a low
network load and avoid large theoretical calculations, it is strongly recommended
that the collision domain be separated so as to limit the network load, using only
switched network (a tree, star or daisy-chain topology). See pages 6/41 and 6/42.
The following guidelines can be used to evaluate the network load. Only switched or
daisy-chained networks should be used, to avoid the system being evaluated in
collision domains.
The guidelines apply only to the following Ethernet communication services:
b
b
b
Other services (FDR Faulty Device Replacement, SNMP network management,
Web server, etc.) and transaction management (connection attempts,
collisions, bandwidth used for establishing and managing services, etc.) are
not taken into consideration in these network load evaluation guidelines.
