Problem
The AVR device cannot be
programmed (continued).
AVR Studio does not detect
STK500.
STK500 cannot be switched
off.
The status LED is blinking
slowly
The status LED is blinking

The LEDs don’t work

Reason
Reset disable fuse is set.
Programming too fast
External pull-up resistor on
reset line too low.
Serial cable is not connected,
or power is off.
PC COM port is in use.
AVR Studio does not detect

Positive center power
connector is used.
There is a short circuit on
AREF
There is a short circuit on
VTARGET.
An external VTARGET is
being used and has been
turned off.
STK500 must be powered for
LEDs to work.
Solution
Check reset disable fuse.
Check oscillator settings and
make sure it is not set higher
than actual clock.
Ensure that external pull-up
resistor is ≥ 4.7 kΩ.
Connect serial cable to
RS232 PROG and check
power connections.
Disable other programs that
are using PC COM port.
Change PC COM port.
Disable COM port auto-
detection in AVR Studio file
menu. Force COM port to
correct COM port.
Use negative center power
connector.
Turn off STK500 by removing
power connector.
Resolve the short circuit.
Resolve the short circuit.
Set VTARGET to a value
below 0.3V in AVR Studio.
Supply poser to STK500 and
turn it on.
