The ZL50130 provides the data-plane processing to enable layer 2 Ethernet service to be extended over a packet
switched network, such as an IP or MPLS system. The device encapsulates the Ethernet frames into IP or MPLS
packets, and forwards them into the packet network for re-construction at the far end. This has a number of
applications, including layer 2 VPNs (Virtual Private Networks).
The ZL50130 is capable of wire speed processing and forwarding of packets, and includes support for the
“Martini-style” layer 2 pseudo-wire protocols currently in development by the IETF’s PWE3 (Pseudo-Wire
Edge-to-Edge Emulation) working group (draft-ietf-pwe3-ethernet-encap).
