Application Description:
Benefits / Advantages to Customer:
3M™ Scotchlite™ Glass Bubbles HGS4000, when added to a drilling
fluid, reduces the density of the fluid column and the down flow
pressure. Consequently, near or under balance conditions can be
reached. These conditions are desirable for low pressure reservoirs in
order to avoid fluid invasion into the formation and damage caused by
the fluid-production zone interaction. In one field trial,16 pounds per
barrel of fluid of glass bubbles were added to an oil based drilling
fluid with an initial density of 7.7 ppg. Glass bubbles reduced the total
fluid density to 7.2 ppg. This field trial represented the first time
3M™ Scotchlite™ Glass Bubbles were tested in an oil based drilling
fluid. Well drilling lasted for 19 days. During this time the density
and all rheological properties of the fluid remained stable.
3M™ Scotchlite™ Glass Bubbles HGS4000 can be a very competitive
technology compared to aerated fluid when low density drilling fluids
are required. Most of these fluids require an expensive compressor with
a very complicated operation in terms of maintaining density stability.
Glass bubbles are not compressible and offer well bore stability and
better hole cleaning. The product can be easily added to the fluid by
hand or by using an automatic device at the rig site. Furthermore, the
fluid can be reused with conditioning.
